Thinking of purchasing new window treatments for your home? Follow these three easy steps to take and record window treatment measurements like a pro.

Step 1: Choose Mount Type

Inside Mount: Many homeowners prefer an inside mount, where the window treatment is mounted inside the window casing. Inside mounts provide a customized, tailored look, and leaves decorative molding visible. These mounts can be installed as deep or as shallow as you’d like, depending on the treatment selected.

Outside Mount: An outside mount should be chosen if there is not enough mounting depth for your window treatment in the window frame. Other reasons to choose an outside mount include making a window appear larger, increasing light control and privacy, and having the flexibility to choose almost any type of window treatment.

Step 2: Measure

Measuring for an Inside Mount:

When measuring, record the exact window dimensions to the nearest eighth of an inch, so as to ensure your window treatment fits properly. Always use a steel measuring tape. For inside mounts measure the width in three different places (i.e. top, middle, and bottom) to ensure accuracy.

To measure the height, you will want to measure the height at the center and both sides of the window, in order to ensure accurate measurements. Use the longest measure for all products except horizontal window treatments. You will want to record the shortest measurements for these.

Measuring for an Outside Mount:

Using a steel tape measure, measure width and height of the overall area you want the window treatment to cover, including overlaps on the top, bottom, and sides. If there are any obstructions, such as door handles and molding, you will want to mention these when ordering in order to ensure the finished product is compatible.

Step 3: Additional Tips

2-On-1 Headrails: If your windows are rather large, you may want to consider the 2-on-1 headrail, where instead of one large window covering you have two on the same headrail. Each window covering generally has its own operating mechanisms. Please contact Right Choice Window Coverings for more information.

Optional Wood Cornice Over Your Blinds or Shades: If you’d like to mount an optional wood cornice over your blinds or shade, order the cornice a minimum of 3” wider than the width of the window opening for inside mounts, and order the cornice the same size as the window covering for outside mounts.
