Part One: Spring Cleaning Windows

Welcome to spring! Today we’re going to walk you through spring cleaning your home’s windows. This is a chore that not many of us care for, but since we all would prefer looking out clean windows, it’s one that’s necessary. So without further ado, let’s get to it, shall we?

Gather Supplies

The first step is to gather all of your supplies:

  • Newspaper
  • Paper towels
  • Hand-vacuum
  • Shallow container
  • Microfiber clothes
  • Window squeegee with extendable handle
  • Your choice of cleaning solution (see below)

Choosing the Right Cleaning Solutions

Store bought vs. homemade. The choice is entirely up to you. Mixing up your own cleaning agent, however, is far more cost-effective and environmentally friendly than many of the cleaning solutions you’ll find on the shelves of your local store. You can find a variety of DIY window cleaning solutions on Pinterest.

Plain white vinegar is a great cleaning solution – simply take ¼ cup of white vinegar and mix it with two cups of warm water in a shallow container or spray bottle. You can also mix in a tablespoon of cornstarch for extra shiny windows. Another homemade window cleaning solution is to mix dish-washing detergent with Jet-Dry.

Cleaning Out Window Frames

Since many window frames are exposed to the elements, blocked only by a screen, they can get pretty clogged up after months of rain, wind, and snow. To clean out your window frames, remove as much of the dried material as possible using clean paper towels or a hand-vacuum equipped with attachments, before adding water.

Going for the Shine

Squeegees with extendable handles are absolutely amazing! I used to waste so many paper towels – and in the process, money – trying to get every little streak off. But not anymore! I simply squeegee my cleaning solution on (you can also spray it on) then squeegee it off. Next, crumple up some newspaper, and buff the windows for shine.

Make sure to stay tuned for part two!
